Buena Vista, Colorado (or “BV” as the locals call it) is the hub of the Arkansas Valley, offering far more than just whitewater. Whether you need to warm up or wind down, the area is packed with world-class adventures and relaxation spots.
The small-town charm of Buena Vista extends to its vibrant food and drink scene, perfect for refueling your crew.
From rustic river cabins to full-service resorts, you have plenty of options to stay and play near the Arkansas River.
The Browns Canyon National Monument section of the Arkansas River is widely considered the best choice for beginners, families, and groups with younger children (typically ages 7 and up, water-level dependent). This trip features continuous, splashy Class III rapids (intermediate), which are exciting and fun, yet manageable and surrounded by breathtaking scenery. For the mildest trip, look for a “Family Float” on the Lower Browns Canyon area, suitable for children as young as 4 or 5.
Experience: No previous rafting experience is required for our beginner and intermediate trips (like Browns Canyon). Our professional guides provide a comprehensive safety talk and paddle instruction before you launch.
Swimming: For all trips, participants wear Coast Guard-approved Personal Flotation Devices (life jackets) designed to keep you afloat. However, strong swimming skills are required for our advanced runs, such as The Numbers (Class IV/V), due to the continuous and technical nature of the rapids. Non-swimmers can usually be accommodated on our mildest floats.
The prime whitewater season on the Arkansas River runs from mid-May through Labor Day (early September).
High Water/Biggest Thrills (Late May–Mid June): Peak snowmelt provides the highest water levels, offering the most intense rapids for experienced rafters.
Ideal Balance (Late June–Early August): The water flow is usually at a medium-high level, providing excellent, classic whitewater that is thrilling but manageable for intermediate and family groups.
Milder Flows (Late August–September): As flows recede, the rapids become slightly less intense, making it a great time for scenic floats and a gentler experience.
Wear: Quick-drying synthetic materials (like polyester, fleece, or swimwear). Avoid cotton (jeans, sweatshirts), as it stays cold when wet. Bring secure footwear that will stay on your feet (old tennis shoes or strap-on water sandals—no flip-flops or Crocs).
Provided: We include essential gear, such as a Coast Guard-approved PFD (life jacket) and a helmet. For cold weather or high water, we also provide complimentary (or for a small fee) wetsuits, neoprene booties, and splash jackets to keep you warm on the river.
