Middle Clear Creek Rafting - Beginner

Middle Clear Creek Rafting

If you’re looking for the best beginner rafting trip near Denver that actually delivers for the whole family — this is it. Middle Clear Creek is Colorado’s most welcoming introduction to whitewater: fun, splashy, and just challenging enough that nobody’s bored. You’ll paddle through 15 named Class II and III rapids, including Mountain Lion and Mister Twister, as Clear Creek winds through the heart of historic Idaho Springs, just 40 minutes from Denver.

What sets Middle Clear Creek apart from every other beginner option on the river is who can come. With a minimum age of just 5 years old, the lowest of any Clear Creek outfitter, this is the trip that lets the whole family get on the water together. No sitting on the sidelines for the little ones. No splitting into separate groups. One raft, one adventure, everyone in.

The section runs through a stretch of river that’s wide open and forgiving, with clearly defined lines through each rapid and plenty of calm water in between for your guides to read the next move. You’ll float past the legacy of Colorado’s 1858 gold rush, the Argo Gold Mine, and the Charlie Taylor waterwheel, while keeping an eye on the canyon walls for bighorn sheep and mule deer. It’s a family whitewater rafting experience that doubles as a genuine Colorado history tour.

No rafting experience is required. Our certified guides handle everything from the pre-trip safety briefing to every rapid call on the water. Wetsuits and splash jackets are included at no extra cost. Your only job is to paddle when your guide says paddle, hold on when they say hold on, and enjoy the ride.

Ready to take it up a notch after this? The Upper Clear Creek intermediate trip is the natural next step for adults and teens 13+ looking for continuous Class III-IV whitewater.

Yes — Middle Clear Creek is specifically designed for families with young kids. We welcome paddlers as young as 5 years old (minimum 50 lbs), which is the youngest age requirement of any Clear Creek rafting outfitter. The section runs Class II and III rapids with wide, readable lines and plenty of calm water between rapids. Our guides are certified in swift-water rescue and experienced at making first-time family rafters feel completely at ease. That said, all participants must wear a PFD (provided) at all times, and a basic comfort around water is helpful.

Middle Clear Creek is our beginner-friendly section, running Class II-III rapids through historic Idaho Springs — ideal for families, kids as young as 5, first-timers, and anyone who wants real whitewater without the intensity of the upper canyon. The Upper Clear Creek intermediate trip is a step up in every way: continuous Class III-IV rapids, a minimum age of 13, and a pace that keeps even experienced paddlers working. Many groups do Middle Clear Creek first, then return to take on the Upper. Both trips meet at the same outpost, so it’s easy to book back-to-back days.
