The Numbers

The Numbers White Water Rafting

The Numbers is one of the most respected and sought-after advanced rafting runs in the United States. Located on the Arkansas River just upstream of Browns Canyon, this stretch gets its name from the sequential rapids numbered 1 through 6 during early river mapping, and every one of them demands your full attention. Continuous Class IV rapids, powerful hydraulics, and technical lines make this the most challenging commercial rafting trip Downstream Adventures offers on the Arkansas.

This is not a beginner trip. Participants must be at least 14 years old, physically fit, and able to swim. Half-day and full-day options are available, both departing from our Nathrop outpost. If you’re looking for a more accessible Arkansas River experience, the Browns Canyon Rafting Trip runs Class III water from the same location.

The Numbers Rafting Trip Highlights

  • Continuous Class IV rapids from start to finish. Unlike trips with flatwater breaks between rapids, The Numbers keeps you paddling and engaged the entire time. Rapids 1 through 6 are the main events, with additional technical water throughout the run.
  • One of the premier advanced rafting runs in the country. The Numbers has hosted national and international whitewater competitions and draws serious paddlers from across the U.S. It’s a bucket-list run for good reason.
  • Half-day or full-day options. The half-day covers approximately 6 river miles in 3 hours on the water. The full-day extends the experience with additional water time and is recommended for groups who want maximum time on the river.
  • Small groups, experienced guides. Our guides know The Numbers rapid by rapid and communicate clearly before each one. Small group sizes mean your guide is focused on your boat, not managing a crowd.
  • Stunning high-mountain scenery. The Numbers runs through open valley terrain with views of the Sawatch Range above, a different visual experience than the tight canyon walls of Browns Canyon.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The section gets its name from the sequential rapids numbered 1 through 6 during early river exploration and mapping of the Arkansas. The name stuck, and those six rapids remain the defining features of the run.

You will want to wear clothes and footwear you are comfortable getting wet in. Swimsuit, athletic shorts, leggings, sun-hoody, rash guard, and fleece top are all suitable layers to wear. Avoid wearing any cotton. You will need shoes that stay on your feet, so no flip-flops or crocs. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are recommended.

Our trips go out rain or shine. It is extremely rare for us to cancel trips based on weather. Although, we do reserve the right to cancel or alter trips if we deem conditions to be unsafe.

Colorado high country often calls for rain in the forecast, but the forecast can be deceiving. Rain and thunderstorms are typically scattered and very short lived. As they saying goes, “If you don’t like the weather in Colorado, wait 15 minutes.”

Our Arkansas River location provides convenient rafting near Buena Vista, Colorado, nestled in the picturesque Arkansas Valley. Surrounded by the majestic Collegiate Peaks, Sawatch Range, and Mosquito Range, Buena Vista offers an ideal setting for white water rafting adventures. Located less than 1.5 hours from Vail and Breckenridge, and just 2 hours from Denver and Colorado Springs, our Arkansas River rafting trips are easily accessible from major cities and mountain resorts alike. Whether you’re seeking thrills on the rapids or simply want to immerse yourself in the beauty of Colorado’s wilderness, Buena Vista is the perfect starting point for your Arkansas River rafting adventure.

All Numbers trips depart from our Nathrop outpost at 17897 US Hwy 285, Nathrop, CO 81236, approximately 2.5 hours from Denver and Colorado Springs and about 8 miles south of downtown Buena Vista.

It can be, but only for first-timers who are physically fit, comfortable in the water, and genuinely prepared for continuous Class IV whitewater. This is not a casual introduction to rafting. If there’s any uncertainty, we recommend starting with the Browns Canyon trip and working up.
